Need assistance with probable clutch issue YT3600

Corksailor
I bought a YT3600 yesterday.  Reasonable good condition, considering its age, no significant rust.  I bought it (cheap) with the indication that the tractor ran well, but the mower deck was not lately working.  (The owner had bought a new Huskvarna).  I accepted that, and will attempt to get that going or else use it as just a tractor (which doesn't thrill me, of course).

It does start and run well.  Engaging the PTO for the mower results in stalling, however.

I removed the belt to the mower from the machine to see how things were turning.  The mower pulleys and blades are all running free.  All looks well except probably the clutch (darn it).   With engine not running, the main pulley on the clutch will rotate relatively freely, just a little scurfing noise.   When I start the engine, it idles normally.  The centre shaft nut can be seen rotating at the end of the clutch/pulley assembly, the pulley is relatively still (no belt on at this time).  When I engage the PTO switch, the engine acts under load and stalls within seconds.

It would seem apparent that the clutch assembly has troubles somewhere.

Am I doomed?  Any possible maintenance here if I remove the clutch?   Replacement clutches available that don't cost me my first born?  Clutches match at all from one Yamaha model to another?

I appreciate any advice you can give.  Thanks.

Simple problem    There is a switch in the seat that goes bad and causes this.  You can disable the switch but it is a safety feature.    You must be sitting on the seat when engaging blades or mower will shut off.

That might well be a big, big WOW!...  I haven`t re-attached the belt to the mower deck yet, but I tested that switch theory by pulling the microswitch with a little wire... worked!  PTO pulley was turning as it should when engaged, no stalling.  As luck would have it, I had been testing before by standing on the foot rests, leaning over the engine to look at the clutch and pulley.  That, of course, failed to trigger the seat switch, so it immediately stalled.

The previous owner indicated that the mower hadn`t been working lately, but I didn`t see any other obstacle... blades, pulleys, belts all looked free and OK.  Will see.  The seat was almost all the way back, I slid it forward as I have short legs... perhaps where they had it, how they sat, failed to trip the switch.  It seems to trigger easily from my weight, sound of an obvious relay being tripped when the engine is not running but power is on and weight is put on the seat.

Lookin`good.  Thanks.  Will report when it starts throwing grass.

Re: Solved!

I reinstalled the belt (fun, probably an ideal way, but I managed by making the clutch pulley the last and working it around that), checked everything out, and I was off mowing.

Responses like yours makes these forum sites worthwhile, particularly when you are working with a machine from twenty-five years ago and have no manual.  Thanks!

You have bought an old mower but it might be the best mower you ever own.  I bought mine new 22 year ago and only small problem still going and in good shape

How I use to put the belt on is the last pulley was one of the idler pulleys on the front of the mower.  Any body has a good way to put this belt on easy I would like to know too.

Happy mowing but not around here we are in a extreme drought

Re: Yamaha

I'm usually impressed with Yamaha products for the cost, though I'm more used to their musical instruments and amplifiers.  Wasn't aware of their lawn products until I came across this.  Have to do some general maintenance on the machine, will sharpen the blades, clean it up well, one bogie wheel mount needs repair, etc., otherwise it seems good, belts are all good, pulleys solid, seat is perfect.  Has had some maintenance in the past, and has a brand new battery.  Cost?... paid $175 for it.  Can't go wrong.  I'd been watching for a used tractor for about $800 so snapped this up within hours when a former student posted it for sale on Facebook.  With its age and apparently some trouble that might only have been the seat switch, they invested in a new Husqvarna.  I didn't realize how unique they were, and how hard it might be to get parts, but hopefully I can get a few years out of it without too much trouble.

Thanks again.  Probably won't be my last query.
