I just acquired my Yamaha. When I try starting it makes a buzzing sound under the seat. Is this a symtom that I need a starter? Or could it be something else?

The buzzing sound is normal ... it's the fuel pump. If it's not starting make sure you're pressing the brake pedal (hard) and the PTO switch is off.
