YT5700

YT5700 Hello all, first time every on this forum. I had a friend drop off a YT5700, smooth running, clean machine, good compression, mostly complete. I have never even seen one of these before. I do have a couple questions on it. when running and ignition key is turned to off position, it sounds like once cylinder is off (different pitch) but keeps running. if i pull left plug, no change. pull right plug and turns off. So assuming they have two coils and each coil has a separate ground wire and assume right ground wire from ignition to coil is bad. is that a fair assumption? Only other item is a high pitched noise when deck is engaged, does not bog engine, so assuming a blade spindle bearing or idler bearing. would there be any place to get aftermarket or OEM bearings for these or just determine which bearing(s) is bad and match with a standard bearing? It's missing a couple misc items like the hydrostat control lever cover (black plastic) and the left side foot rubber pad, do people ever sell parts off of these from scrap machines? i will search Ebay, but thought this would be a good place to ask. Otherwise the unit seems to run and drive really well and it's a very solid unit and exceptionally clean. Thank you Craig

they have two coils. i have a 6800 and 90 percent of my problems have been corroded wires and connections. try cleaning every connection first then see if it shuts off correctly. should be able to march the spindle bearing with an aftermarket one. not many parts for these mowers. i have had riders for 45 years and have never seen or owned a riding mowers as good as these. i also have a two year old troy built 17.5 h.p. which cannot compare with these yama's. i have replaced a coil, lower oil seal, cleaned the wire connections and rewired the pto. those safety switches (under the seat and the one for the break pedal) can be a pain also so check them. good luck   Denny

Thanks Denny
cleaned all connectors and they were all in really good shape, not brittle or anything.  Pulled engine top shroud off and a mouse had chewed ground wire for right coil, so rewired and key ignition now works great for on/off.
The spindle bearings are getting worn, so i ordered six 6204 bearings to replace all spindle bearings, the idler pully bearings were all good.
Just need to find the shifter bezel or laser cut an aluminum plate that I could form over it for now, to try and match the OEM one.
Thanks for the input, it was fun working on this machine.  machine was really clean inside and out.

glad you found the problem. i once lost an engine on one of those mtd mowers from a huge mouse nest under the shroud. got hot and seized up. mine had a homemade shifter bezel when i got it. been several people needing one and can't figure out why the bezels are bad or gone.my steering needs some attention this summer. starting to get really loose. i'm gonna keep this thing running as long as i can. good luck and maybe we can compare notes on future repairs and parts   Denny
