YT3600 Hydro

PanicSync
I am an original Yamaha YT3600P owner from April 1991 with two questions.  I own the service manual but for some reason I can not find the procedure to drain the hydro transmission oil.  Also the oil in the service manual for the differential gearbox states 10W-30 "Gear Oil" but the owner's manual shows plain old 10W-30 API SE or SF.  Any thoughts?  I may check with an RTV dealer if gear oil of this lighter weight is available.  The local "Automotive" chain said it did not exist but I do see some on the net.  (19 years with only the crankcase gasket needing replaced)

PanicSync,
Welcome to the forum...glad to have you.
You are probably one of the few people that does have a service manual on here.
There has been a few discussions about the hydro oil, and as you said, regular 10W30 was the original.
Other owners have reccomended a synthetic 10W30 or straight 40 weight. I tend to think the heavier
straight 40 would be better. Here is a quote from another thread about changing the oil...

From fellow member Meofuse---
"There is a thread on this forum that I started early last summer with pictures included. I rebuilt the hydro on my YT6700 because of lack of maintenance by the previous owner. There is no drain plug in the hydro to drain the old oil but there are two ways to drain it if you are somewhat mechanical inclined. The first and easiest way would be to remove the filler cup that attaches to the unit and using a small syringe and small tube try to suck out the oil. You will find that this doesn't work very well and will not get all the gunk and dirt accumlated on the inside bottom. The second way is to raise the tractor so you can access the hydro. If you remove the rear tire on the side where you pull the lift lever for hydro neutral you can see where the lift lever actuates a small button on the hydro. This button actually opens a passage that allows the oil to flow freely in the unit to prevent damage if you need to move the tractor without the engine running. Be that as it may, the button is held in place by a hex nut. Loosen and remove the hex nut around the button... be careful there is a small spring in the unit, do not lose it! The oil will drain out. If you can, flush the unit with kerosene or something to remove the sediment, blow the unit out with an airhose and replace the spring/button nut/lever. The book calls for regular 10W/30 motor oil but I put a straight 40 weight in, it improves performance on the older unit and adds better wear protection."

Glad to see an original owner on here...especially with that nice service record.

Meofouse
Glad you reposted my original instructions.
The spring season is upon us here "up Nort" and the yt6700 is already pulling it's own weight, trailers, boats etc. Being somewhat up there in age I acutally forgot how I changed the hydro oil, it's been a year ya know.
The unit has run flawlessly since the rebuild using straight 40 weight and I am going to drain, flush and refill again probably this week. One thing to add. After the drain, fill procedure in order to get the oil distributed through the whole unit it helps to push and pull the tractor by hand with the motor off and the bypass lever down until you feel the resistance again.
Thanks for the repost

PanicSync...any chance you'd be willing to photocopy your service manual for the yt3600 for me for a few bucks?  I'd sure like to have one.

I have just purchased a used yt3600. I looked all over for a way to check the oil.
I can not find one? Do you know how  or where i can check the oil on this lawn tractor?
Is there a pdf of the owners manual out there somewhere?  Thanks for any help or info...

Hello I just purchased a YT3600 and I tell you I have owned the Honda mower but this mower is so much better i really love the hydrostatic drive. i wish i would have bought one new when they still made them. love it. your oil dip stick is located on the drivers side of the mower or left if you are sitting on it. it is down on the lower front side part of the engine block near the frame. its a little rubber stem.
hope this helps.
